Diamond Shape

Diamond cutting is the practice of shaping a diamond from a rough stone into a faceted gem. Cutting diamonds requires specialized knowledge, tools, equipment, and techniques because of its extreme difficulty.

In TONOUS we offer the following Shapes of Diamonds

Diamonds's Cut Grade

A diamond's cut, often considered the most crucial of the 4Cs, is determined by its proportions, polish, and symmetry. This craftsmanship directly impacts how the diamond interacts with light—its brilliance, fire, and sparkle. A well-proportioned cut allows light to reflect and refract perfectly through the top of the stone, creating the stunning shimmer diamonds are known for. In contrast, a poorly cut diamond, whether too deep or too shallow, will leak light from its base, diminishing its luster and making it appear lifeless. Diamond cuts are evaluated on a scale from Poor to Ideal.

At TONOUS Jewellery, we only offer diamonds with an Excellent to Ideal cut.

Diamond Clarity

Clarity is all about a diamond's purity. Essentially, it's a measure of how many tiny flaws, or "inclusions," are inside the stone. These little imperfections often look like minuscule black spots and are created when the diamond is first forming. You usually can't see these flaws just by looking at the diamond; you need a special magnifying loupe. However, these imperfections are used to determine its clarity and play a big role in its price. The cleaner the diamond, the more expensive it will be. Because these imperfections are so small, it's smart to always check the diamond's certificate, which will explain its clarity grade. There are eleven different clarity grades, from the perfectly pure Flawless (FL) to the more included I3.

At TONOUS Jewellery, we mainly sell diamonds in the IF-VVS1 to SI1 range, which are considered 'eye clean,' meaning you won't see any flaws without magnification.

Diamond Carat

Carat (ct) is the standard unit for measuring the weight of a diamond or other gemstone.

It's a common misconception that carat weight directly relates to a gem's size. Different cuts and shapes distribute weight uniquely; for example, a marquise or pear cut diamond may appear larger than its carat weight would suggest. For this reason, a gemstone's size is measured separately in millimeters (length and width).

Consequently, an emerald cut diamond and a pear cut diamond with the same carat weight will have different dimensions.

Diamond's Color

A diamond's color is determined by the absence or presence of a natural hue within the stone. A diamond with a noticeable yellow or brown tint is considered to have more color. Generally, the more colorless a diamond is, the greater its value.

The presence of color indicates the inclusion of trace elements during the diamond's formation. These tints can diminish a diamond's color grade and its overall value. While a slight tint may not detract from the diamond's beauty—and may even enhance its unique character—greater amounts of color can impede the passage of light, making the stone appear darker or less brilliant. In contrast, light easily transmits through a colorless stone, maximizing its fire and brilliance.

In the realm of color, lab-grown diamonds differ significantly from their mined counterparts. Due to the controlled conditions of a laboratory, the mineral contamination that causes color is greatly reduced, resulting in a much higher proportion of colorless diamonds.

While mined diamonds can range from D to Z on the color scale, with D-F being exceptionally rare and costly, the controlled environment of lab production typically yields diamonds graded J (near colorless) or higher, with the D-F range being commonly preferred.

Diamond's Certification

A diamond's certification provides a comprehensive analysis of its attributes, including the 4Cs: carat weight, color, clarity, and cut quality. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is widely recognized as a preeminent authority in diamond grading. The final grade assigned to a diamond is a major determinant of its price.

Therefore, it is essential to verify that any diamond you intend to purchase is accompanied by a certification from a reputable laboratory, as this ensures the price accurately reflects the stone's quality.

In TONOUS we offer GIA, IGI, and HRD certificate accombined with diamonds.

Natural Diamonds Vs Lab-Created Diamonds

The fundamental distinction between a natural and a lab-grown diamond lies in its origin. Natural diamonds are geological formations that develop deep within the Earth over billions of years, whereas lab-grown diamonds are synthesized in a controlled laboratory environment in a much shorter timeframe.

Despite this difference in origin, the two are chemically, physically, and optically identical. A gemologist can differentiate them by analyzing trace amounts of nitrogen, which are characteristic of natural diamonds, and by observing their unique growth patterns and inclusion types.

In TONOUS we provide both Natural and Lab-Created Diamonds

Diamond's Polish

In diamond grading, "polish" denotes the quality of the diamond's surface finish, specifically the smoothness of its facets. Graded on a scale from Poor to Excellent, this characteristic is crucial for a diamond's light performance and brilliance. Unlike clarity and cut, which are distinct attributes, polish is assessed by a gemologist using a loupe to inspect for external imperfections such as scratches, nicks, or subtle polishing lines.

Metal Purity

Millesimal fineness is a standardized system for expressing the purity of precious metal alloys, such as those made from platinum, gold, and silver. This method indicates the proportion of pure metal within the alloy by parts per thousand by mass. For instance, an alloy with a gold content of 75% is designated as "750." Many nations in Europe utilize decimal hallmarks, such as "585" or "750," to certify this level of purity.

Diamond's Symmetry

In diamond grading, "symmetry" denotes the exactness and proportional balance of a diamond's facets.

A superior symmetry grade signifies that the facets are uniformly shaped and precisely aligned, which contributes to a symmetrical, mirror-like appearance and maximizes the diamond's ability to interact with light.

Conversely, poor symmetry can manifest as misaligned facets, an off-center culet or table, or a non-circular girdle, which can lead to light distortion and a decrease in brilliance.

Diamond fluorescence

Diamond fluorescence is the emission of visible light, typically with a blue hue, when the stone is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This phenomenon, which is a result of trace elements like nitrogen, is evaluated on a grading report based on its intensity (ranging from None to Very Strong).

Fluorescence can influence a diamond's appearance and market value. In some cases, a very strong fluorescence can cause a milky or hazy appearance in higher-color-grade diamonds, while in lower-color-grade stones, it can sometimes make them appear more colorless.
